Consumer spending accounts for more than two-thirds of gross domestic product a measure of the value of all goods and services produced in United States. As the Consumer Confidence Index rises, so does the propensity of Americans to spend. And the impact of the federal economic stimulus funds has yet to be felt.
Also in April, the Census Bureau reported that only 11.9 percent of United States residents moved to another house between 2007 and 2008 -- the lowest percentage ever recorded since the late 1940s. The number of movers, 35 million, was the lowest since 1959-60, and less than half were homeowners. Clearly, we must restore confidence in Americans that a home is a good investment. They are entering the new decade with different attitudes about the size of home and its features and neighborhood than prior buyers. Community developers and builders must be smarter with design and marketing than ever before.
